PC Magazine programmer’s technical reference
Hummel R., Ziff-Davis PUblishing Co., Hightstown, NJ, 1992. Type: Book (9781562760168)
Date Reviewed: Oct 1 1992

This complete technical reference manual for Intel processors begins with an overview of the 80x86 processor family, from the 8086 through the 80486. A chapter on computer math for beginners is followed by chapters on the 80x86 architecture, memory structure, and input/output structure. Next, a complete chapter covers all of the processors’ instructions. Additional chapters give more information on various features such as interrupts, debugging, and math coprocessors. Chapter 14 is dedicated to all known 80x86 bugs and incompatibilities.

The index makes it easy to find just about anything one needs. The information found is complete, accurate, and easy to read. The typesetting is pleasant and uncluttered. The second chapter, which explains binary arithmetic, is a little out of place. The book is strictly a reference manual, and it would seem that the typical user would be advanced enough to know this material. It is a disappointment that the chapter on bugs covers only Intel products. Programmers must contend with bugs in other manufacturers’ products (such as AMD’s) as well. Interestingly enough, the NEC V20 and V30 chips are covered. This minor flaw is not really of any concern, however, as information on other manufacturers’ products is readily available.

This book fulfills its author’s purpose of providing a complete technical reference manual. Its intended audience is the professional programmer with a knowledge of computer fundamentals. Hardware designers involved in 80x86 design projects will also find this book useful. It does a good job of explaining Intel architectures, so no previous knowledge of the 80x86 family is needed. It is an excellent reference manual for software and hardware professionals.
