The material in this book was covered in research and teaching at the University of New Mexico over a period of two years. The book consists of 18 chapters, a subject index, and an author index. After the introduction (chapter 1), the book covers some basic concepts: fuzzy set theory (chapter2), fuzzy logic (chapter 3), fuzzy rule-based expert systems (chapters 4 and 5), and fuzzy logic hardware and software (chapter 6). These basic concepts are followed by applications of fuzzy logic hardware and software, in chapters 7 through 17: laser beam alignment, manufacturing planning, oil recovery techniques, personnel detection, configuring a digital filter, simulation of traffic flow and control, geometric pattern recognition and learning, control of robotic manipulators, electrical power generation, resin curing, and flight control systems. Finally, chapter 18 deals with the tuning of fuzzy logic controllers.

The book has a foreword by Lotfi Zadeh (the inventor of fuzzy sets) in which he predicts that “soft computing” (computing based on imprecise models of reasoning, including fuzzy logic, neural networks, and probabilistic reasoning) is destined to replace “hard computing” (which is based on rigorous and precise models of reasoning) as the methodology on which artificial intelligence is based. The editors of this book stress the importance of the material by pointing out that the United States Office of Technology Assessment has determined that expert systems (including fuzzy expert systems) constitute the foremost technology for cost reduction in space applications.

The book has some typographical errors and some erroneous numbering of pages. It contains no exercises. The book includes postcards with which to request information about fuzzy logic software that is available for purchase.

This book provides lucid and comprehensive coverage of fuzzy systems and their applications. It is suitable for use as a textbook for an advanced undergraduate or graduate course or as a reference for the professional.
