Kalles is seriously concerned about the insult caused by the hasty review of papers submitted to journals for publication. He describes two cases in which his papers were rejected, without naming the reviewers or the journals. He expresses his belief that “journals should explicitly be held responsible for lapses in the reviewing process,” and proposes a solution. His solution, which would impose additional burdens on reviewers and journals, will never be adopted because the present system, although flawed and sometimes insulting to authors, is good enough as shown by the proliferation of badly reviewed papers, journals, and conferences. In short, as the masters of our conferences and journals would probably say, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
