This paper summarizes a survey conducted by Störrle for software (SW) modeling efforts in various industries. Störrle also tries to bring out the impact of SW modeling and the challenges faced by the modelers.
While the idea is interesting, the paper is not correctly titled to reflect the content, which is about SW modeling only. Modeling is a huge domain and SW modeling is just a subset of this domain. The title should clearly reflect that this paper is about SW modeling only and not about system modeling or other modeling efforts.
Secondly, this paper is not an original research contribution; it primarily involves data collection, and presents a study and results based on the collected data. In such cases, to obtain a meaningful resulting study, it is expected to collect a well-defined set of data points. About ten data sets were collected for this study, which is extremely insufficient for this kind of theoretical and empirical study and results. Even for the limited field of SW modeling, Störrle has not successfully collected data from all the segments of the industry.
The paper is not able to draw a specific conclusion at the end of the study. It provides widely known results and well-estimated answers. Consequently, I wonder about the merit of this study.
