I expected the proceedings of the Third International Conference on Information Systems, Technology and Management (ICISTM) to be a rich collection of actionable research papers in information systems (IS) and information technology (IT) management. But the tilt of the collection toward abstract research, rather than practical aspects of IS implementation, narrows the audience to mostly research scholars; there are only four notable exceptions to this rule, which I address below.

First of all, the collection is too diverse--30 papers, presented in ten sessions, that range from algorithms and workflows to scheduling and distributed systems. Nevertheless, some of the papers have real practical value for IS managers--for example, “An approach towards software quality assessment” categorizes the possible software quality attributes, and then uses a case study to demonstrate a model for software quality measurement. The following papers also exhibit a practical tilt: “A study to identify the critical success factors for ERP implementation in an Indian SME: a case based approach,” “An integrated rule-based and case-based reasoning approach for selection of the software packages,” and “Value-based risk management for Web information goods.” As far as the remaining papers are concerned, a typical chief information officer (CIO) will perhaps not fully appreciate the importance of even the best-selected paper, “A reduced lattice greedy algorithm for selecting materialized views.”

The book begins with paragraph-long abstracts of the conference’s four keynote speeches. This is unfortunate, as I would have loved to read the keynotes on “Futures of Software Engineering” and “Seeing Beyond Computer Science and Software Engineering.” This omission is a major shortcoming of the book. In addition to the 30 selected papers, the book also presents two-page extended abstracts of 14 posters presented in the poster session of the conference.

The book’s layout, length, and presentation are quite good. Although it includes an author index at the end, there is no subject index.

Computer science (CS) students and research scholars, particularly those who work in the software engineering field, will like this book. That being said, very few papers will appeal to CIOs and IS manager.
