Two Oracle Certified Professional Java SE 7 (OCPJP 7) programmers produced this comprehensive certification guide for Java SE 7, with the intent to cover all topics on exams 1Z0-804 and 1Z0-805. While the book focuses on the aspects required to pass these exams, the reader should already be familiar with the fundamentals of the Java language, including data types, strings, arrays, Java operators, and statements, and basic facts about classes and methods.

The first chapter presents 18 frequently asked questions about the OCPJP 7 exam with relevant answers. Chapter 2 includes a pretest (half-time test) to acquaint the reader with the OCPJP 7 exam. The pretest includes 45 questions covering 12 topics in the syllabus, with answers and explanations. The authors present a post-pretest evaluation sheet they developed to help readers identify the topics likely to be required to pass the exam.

The subsequent nine chapters provide in-depth detail on each area of the certification exam, and do it well. The authors use inspired examples to illustrate concepts such as the locale class, reading and setting the locale, building and loading a resource bundle in an application, and formatting numbers, currency, time, and other numerical data. In chapter 13, the authors demonstrate the process of working with threads associated with the exam topics using the mechanisms provided by Java, and discuss concurrent access problems and the wait/notify mechanism. Chapter 14 explores concurrency and the use of java.util.concurrent collections, the application of atomic variables and locks, the usage of executors and thread pools, and the parallel fork/join framework. The last chapter provides a quick summary of important points to remember.

The appendices are well designed. Appendix A details the structure of the OCPJP 7 exam. Appendices B and C present mock tests with answer sheets, solutions, and explanations. The book concludes with a good index.

The book is well organized and completely oriented to the exam topics. A large number of well-designed examples, comments, highlights, points to remember, and end-of-chapter summaries are provided. I recommend this excellent certification guide to anyone interested in Java programming at the professional level. It is probably not suitable as a university textbook.
