Computer vision and image processing in intelligent systems and multimedia technologies
Sarfraz M., IGI Global, Hershey, PA, 2014. 312 pp. Type: Book (978-1-466660-30-4)
Date Reviewed: Apr 21 2016

Organized by domain or topic--such as healthcare, fruit and produce visual analysis, face recognition, web content analysis, digital watermarking, or planar object analysis, among others--the book comprises 16 chapters that can be read as independent journal papers.

Each paper follows a common structure, starting with an introduction and related work, followed by a discussion of the application and its underlying principles, and ending with a small glossary. An ample reference section (close to 1,000 references) at the end is also included.

The chapters, or papers, are directed to expert developers and practitioners. They are not general enough to provide a comprehensive perspective of the various areas of computer vision and image processing, most notably deep learning, and there is very little discussion of multimedia (speech, video) applications or principles.

Despite this, several topics of image processing, including content filtering, watermarking, and efficient color encoding of images, are timely and will be of good use to practitioners.
