Introduction to probability with statistical applications (2nd ed.)
Schay G., Birkhäuser Basel, New York, NY, 2016. 385 pp. Type: Book (978-3-319306-18-6)
Date Reviewed: Oct 26 2016

This is an excellently written text, the second edition of the book by Geza Schay, emphasizing the principles of probability but housed in major topics of statistics.

The reader is cautioned that the book is calculus based and can be used productively by mathematics students, computer science students, and both undergrad and grad students in business and/or MBA courses as long as the courses are, as said, calculus based.

After the obligatory chapters 1 and 2 on basic terminology of set theory, chapter 3 begins the text with a serious discussion of combinatorial problems. Chapter 4 covers the basics of probabilities, and chapter 5 continues with a sophisticated explanation of random variables.

Chapter 6 covers expectation, variance, and moments in thorough detail, while chapter 7 deals with special distributions, that is, Poisson, normal random, central limit, and also additional types of variables.

The book concludes with major topics in statistics, including estimation, hypothesis testing, power functions, sampling, chi-square, two-sample testing, Kolmogorov, and regression.

The book contains several excellent and challenging exercises for the student.
