Intelligent computing systems : emerging application areas
Tsihrintzis G., Virvou M., Jain L., Springer International Publishing, New York, NY, 2016. 368 pp. Type: Book (978-3-662491-77-5)
Date Reviewed: Dec 1 2016

A kaleidoscope of topics, approaches, and writing styles, Intelligent computing systems: emerging application areas presents a rare variety of content.

The book contains 16 chapters--independent papers--that range from surveys and programming papers to technical accounts, describing solutions or experiments in specific domains. Most of the papers outline results from European projects.

A closer look at the organization of the book allows us to distinguish three main areas of interest: the social science and public sector; energy and smart cities; and big data. The papers touch upon a group of techniques, including the semantic web, ontologies, machine learning, predictive analytics, genetic algorithms, and smart microgrids, to name a few, and a variety of applications, such as 3D printing, environmental heatmaps, public transportation, and virtual collaboration. The several survey papers address agent-based modeling in world politics, spatial environments, and education. Each paper contains a very detailed related work section, allowing nonexperts to grasp some of the main trends or features.

The book demonstrates the large span of information and communications technology (ICT) as enabling novel solutions on the one hand and the variety of application areas and approaches that are relevant to them on the other. It combines a vast variety of topics that can pertain to a large audience.

A great mix of domains, this book will be of interest to scholars and programmers interested in the subject matter areas of the individual chapters.
