Female innovators at work : women on top of tech
Newnham D., Apress, New York, NY, 2016. 216 pp. Type: Book (978-1-484223-63-5)
Date Reviewed: Jul 12 2017

Newnham, founder of the Junto Network and other endeavors, has collected 20 interviews with women who have successful careers in technology and innovation. If you are looking for role models and inspiration, this is an excellent book.

These are stories that need to be told. Common themes are “unwavering grit and determination to succeed,” and “how mission-led many of the startups are.” If these appear to be common traits of successful people, the author notes that “women comprise less than 25 percent of the technology workforce and startups” and “female founders make up less than seven percent of the venture-backed enterprises.” So these pioneers faced very strong headwinds.

The interviews typically begin with questions concerning formative years and how the individual began her career path. The questions then move to how the individual became involved in technology or entrepreneurship, with an emphasis on major experiences and lessons learned. They conclude with a summation of advice and an eye toward the future. Each interview is approximately ten pages, and they are essentially mini-mentorship lessons. There is a comprehensive topical index.

These successes will inspire both women and men. They remind us of the power of goals and focus. You will want to read these interviews.
