An indoor test methodology for solar-powered wireless sensor networks
Tan W., Sullivan P., Watson H., Slota-Newson J., Jarvis S. ACM Transactions on Embedded Computing Systems16 (3):1-25,2017.Type:Article
Date Reviewed: Dec 21 2017

Reliable hardware and algorithms for solar-powered wireless sensor networks (WSNs) require precise and reproducible indoor tests. But how should repeatable indoor tests of solar-powered WSNs be performed without the use of costly solar simulators with short lifespan lighting elements? Tan and colleagues present a reliable procedure, with roots in astronomy and photovoltaic cell design, for indoor testing of solar-powered WSNs.

The authors recognize the need to incorporate the associations among the locations, irradiance, and dates and times into predicting the outage of solar-powered WSNs. Consequently, they offer a better astronomical model for testing irradiance in solar cells. The broad test device for solar-powered WSNs includes (1) a light source that coincides with the frequency sensitivity of the solar panel, (2) an instrument for computing the current of the solar panel, and (3) a response mechanism for regulating lighting elements due to the difference between the target and actual currents of solar cells.

Experiments were performed to assess the congruency between the currents produced by the actual solar cells and the theoretical astronomical model. The testing experiments focused on lighting elements of WSN nodes in both centralized and distributed systems. The experimental results are somewhat reliable. The authors clearly identified the limitations of the experiments. How should the actual daily temperatures and lighting patterns be incorporated into an indoor solar-powered WSN study? Hardware and algorithm designers of solar-powered WSNs should read this paper.
