Application of augmented reality for multi-scale interactions in emergency vehicles
Paravantes G., Leehane H., Premarathna D., Chung C., Kappen D.  AutomotiveUI 2018 (Proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Automotive User Interfaces and Interactive Vehicular Applications, Toronto, ON, Canada, Sep 23-25, 2018)221-224.2018.Type:Proceedings
Date Reviewed: Oct 23 2018

The paper describes research in its early stages. It presents a concept for using augmented reality (AR) to assist emergency medical technicians (EMTs) rushing to respond to emergency calls.

The authors describe two heads-up displays (HUDs): one that provides standard navigation to the accident and to the hospital, and the other relates to pre-triage scenarios under the control of the paramedic in the passenger seat. They describe the types of information that can be gathered and displayed, perhaps even using videos from the scene, with details about the patient’s possible injuries, level of distress, vital statistics, and position at the accident site.

The authors are familiar with AR and mixed reality (MR) systems. They are aware of issues such as cognitive load and ergonomics. There is an extensive bibliography. I look forward to the next steps in their research: formulating a plan for gathering information from the person making the emergency call and from other sources, and then designing tests, most likely initially in some type of simulation, to see if information can be gathered quickly and effectively so that the presentation helps EMTs and the public.
