Network routing : algorithms, protocols, and architectures (2nd ed.)
Medhi D., Ramasamy K., Morgan Kaufmann Publishers Inc., Cambridge, MA, 2018. 1018 pp. Type: Book (978-0-128007-37-2)
Date Reviewed: Dec 4 2018

Network routing is an important aspect of networks. Routing architectures, algorithms, protocols, analysis, and operational deployment are investigated in this book via a detailed approach.

The book has six parts. The first part (four chapters) starts with an introduction, including Internet protocol version 4 (IPv4) and Internet protocol version 6 (IPv6). Chapter 2 presents routing algorithms, and chapter 3 is about routing protocols. Chapter 4 presents network flow models. Part 2 has five chapters. Chapter 5 is about IP network routing. Chapter 6 is about standardized protocols such as open shortest path first (OSPF), and chapter 7 is about traffic engineering such as network flow optimization. Chapters 8 and 9 are about multicast routing and routing architectures, respectively. The third (four chapters) gives information about routing, for example, public switched telephone network (PSTN) routing and dynamic routing. Part 4 has three chapters. Chapters 14 and 15 include information about IP address lookup algorithms and IP packet filtering. Chapter 16 is about different switching mechanisms such as multiprotocol label switching (MPLS). Part 5 (four chapters) includes chapters on packet queueing (chapter 17) and traffic conditioning (chapter 18). The rest of the book--Part 6 (five chapters)--covers advanced routing topics.

Every chapter starts with a “reading guideline” on what to read to understand the materials presented. It also gives information about which other chapters this chapter is connected to. The chapters do not necessarily have to be read in order.

Most networking textbooks are very dense and it is hard to cover every chapter in a single semester. Furthermore, students often feel overwhelmed by thick books. As this textbook briefly covers many important topics, it will be a very valuable resource for teaching. I highly recommend it over other popular networking textbooks.

The book can be used by network professionals, students, and researchers. The audience is assumed to have basic network knowledge. The book gives a broad overview of network routing.
