Migrating to Azure : transforming legacy applications into scalable cloud-first solutions
Garverick J., Apress, New York, NY, 2018. 324 pp. Type: Book (978-1-484235-84-3)
Date Reviewed: Jun 18 2019

Migrating to Azure covers the fundamentals of migrating, securing, and deploying legacy applications on the Microsoft Azure cloud. Due to their high availability and cost effectiveness, cloud computing technologies have been increasingly used for application deployment.

The book provides a step-by-step guide to hosting legacy applications on Azure. Topics covered include capacity planning, domain architectures, security, and network monitoring, as well as performance monitoring aspects in terms of server planning and security.

The book is organized into three parts, which allows for easy reading. Part 1 deals with legacy applications and their architecture. It covers fundamental concepts such as finding integration points for applications and understanding domain architectures. This part also emphasizes security and compliance, including identifying the risks at different layers and mitigating them effectively, as well as different operating models.

The second part deals with application planning and architecture. It covers various aspects dealing with the efficacy and scalability of applications, for example, network capacity planning, load balancing, application architecture, and backup and recovery. There is a dedicated chapter on various performance considerations, such as underload/overload and anticipating traffic patterns. This part also includes a chapter on architecture at various levels, such as application, data, and security.

Part 3 deals with application hosting on the cloud, including issues such as scalability and cloud configuration. It also explains the deployment pipeline and operational reliability.

The book is useful for learning concepts and technologies related to Azure application hosting. It is solely focused on legacy applications and does not cover aspects such as machine learning support from Azure. While there are several articles on the given subject, this is the first major book effort in this direction. It is a useful resource for the community.
