Biometric samples have been used in forensic examinations for decades. However, this book is a compilation of efforts by several groups to systematize the union of the two sciences into a body of knowledge to be used, in concert, for criminal investigations as well as many other venues that require the fruits of biometrics.

This text is the culmination of interdisciplinary studies developed to stimulate the use of both sciences for maximum benefit in appropriate settings. The project is called cost IC11106. The consortium is composed of 40 members, mainly from research institutions in Europe, the US, Australia, and China.

The text is divided into five parts: “Analysis of Fingerprints and Fingermarks,” “Face and Video Analysis,” “Human Motion, Speech and Behavioral Analysis,” “Statistical Analysis of Forensic Biometric Data,” and “Ethical and Legal Issues.”

In Part 1, five chapters present methods for analyzing fingerprints, fingermarks, ID from partial prints, and altered prints. The illustrations are well done.

Part 2, “Face and Video Analysis,” consists of four chapters detailing advances in this type of analysis, especially the use of digitization.

Part 3 explores human motion, speech, and behavioral analysis. This series of chapters demonstrates the importance of advanced statistics to determine a person’s identity. Also of importance is the concept of soft biometrics, that is, personal traits of the suspected individual when more blatant methods such as fingerprints and so on are not available.

Part 4 deals with the interpretation of data acquired by professionals in the identification of people of interest. The statistics involved are sophisticated.

Part 5 consists of a single chapter concerned with ethical issues in biometric forensics. These issues include collection, processing, and storing personal data. The overall emphasis is on respect for human dignity in the entire forensic procedure.

This text can be of significant value to professionals and students considering a career in forensic biometrics. It is exceptionally well illustrated and documented.
