This interesting article studies the technology use of 14 individuals living in post-retirement communities in Scotland. The age range of the subjects is 66 to 86.

The authors found that email and web browsing were used by all of the respondents. Some also engaged in social networking, travel booking, online shopping, and online banking.

The authors hint at an underlying distrust older people have of technological devices, but they do not specifically address the cause of the distrust. They note an impetus to stay with old technology. This is summed up by one of their concluding observations: “For most of their lives, they [the respondents] functioned just fine without the digital devices and services younger generations take for granted” (p. 77).
