Dr. Ivan Flores has been a seminal player in the development of computer science. He received a BA in Psychology from Brooklyn College in 1948, an MA in Mathematics from Columbia University and a PhD in Vocational Education from NYU in 1955.
Early on he worked in the printing industry at Mergenhaler Linotype Corp. and then at Balco in Newark developing thin transparent electrical conductive coatings for glass.
Self-taught in mainframe computers, he qualified as an Associate Professor and was on the faculty of Brooklyn Polytechnic from 1958 to 1963. During his tenure he authored a book about how computers work, entitled "Computer Logic," published by Prentice-Hall in 1960.
Realizing the need for a text about how computers perform different kinds of arithmetic he wrote another book, "The Logic of Computer Arithmetic," published in 1963 by Prentice-Hall.
During that time he accepted a position as Adjunct Professor of EE at NYU. He continued to write about various phases of computers, programming languages, hardware, software, operating systems and databases for a total of seventeen books. All were eventually translated into one or more foreign languages.
In addition, in 1960 Dr. Flores established and became president of Flores Associates, a service providing consultation about computer design and application, such as: office automation, character recognition, operating systems, programming and hardware design, military and business system analysis and proposal writing.
From 1965 until 1967 he was Professor of EE at Stevens Institute. He was wooed away in 1967 by the City University of New York and established the program in Computer Science. He remained a Professor there until 1990, when he retired. Since then he has been actively enjoying teaching as an Adjunct Professor at several Universities in the NYC metropolitan area.
