Computer-aided data analysis: a practical guide
Green W., John Wiley & Sons, Inc., New York, NY, 1985. Type: Book (9789780471809289)
Date Reviewed: Jan 1 1986

Green provides a summary of techniques for data manipulation and analysis with particular application to the geological and surveying fields. The first part of the book explains computing concepts, univariate and multivariate statistical analysis, and principles/tools for writing using programs. In the second part, spatial analysis (graphics, mapping) is discussed. The third, and final, part provides an overview of more advanced statistical techniques (including regression, factor analysis, time series, and modeling).

The book provides a good conceptual overview of statistics and computing, especially as they apply to natural resource topics. It is both well organized and easy to read. The book has numerous examples of what computer analysis can provide, particularly in the graphical representation of data. The author does not provide descriptions of specific software systems (like GEOLOG, SPSSX, or Intergraph). Instead he refers the reader to a strong bibliography. In addition, a useful glossary is provided.

This book gives a good introduction to statistical computing as applied to surveying, mining, geology, and forestry. It is recommended for students, practitioners, and computing professionals working in natural resource fields.
