Knowledge management and business model innovation
Malhotra Y. Idea Group Publishing, Hershey, PA,2001.Type:Divisible Book
Date Reviewed: Nov 1 2001

This book is a compilation of 25 articles on various perspectives of knowledge management. The underlying theme of all the articles, which have been grouped into four sections, is the increasingly dominant role of knowledge management and business model innovation in survival and success. Malhotra, who is the founding chairman and chief knowledge architect of, the US-based learning enterprise, has put together this contemporary collection of views from 34 authors quite cogently. He also contributes the lead articles in each section.

The first section comprises six articles and primarily covers the conceptual framework of knowledge management. Readers can gain an understanding of knowledge management as an enabler of business model innovation for knowledge-based enterprises. Discussions of the links between organizational learning and knowledge management and building competitive advantage in the knowledge economy are significant. The second section emphasizes the transformation of the post-industrial paradigm of work towards the knowledge-based work that characterizes the innovative business models of the digital economy.

The second section, comprising seven articles, traverses the evolution from information management to knowledge management, proposing a model of knowledge management with the following four key characteristics:

  • playfulness in organizational choices
  • shift away from error avoidance to error detection and correction
  • strategic planning as ÔÇťanticipation of surprise”
  • creative chaos through organizational vision
The role and importance of intranets for managing knowledge in virtual organizations is discussed quite pragmatically in another article in the second section.
