Touch-sensitive screens: the technologies and their application
Pickering J. International Journal of Man-Machine Studies25 (3):249-269,1986.Type:Article
Date Reviewed: Sep 1 1987

This paper covers various methods that use touch to enter information into a computer. Acoustic, touch-sensitive diaphragms and various speculative methods are described, and an attempt is made to evaluate and rank them.

User response and satisfaction from these devices is compared with that from keyboards and “mice.” It is concluded that the latter are more popular for relatively coarse input from, for example, bins, but that track balls are preferred for precision applications such as air traffic control.
