Troubleshooting your PC (2nd ed.)
Aspinwall J., Burke R., Todd M., MIS:Press, New York, NY, 1994. Type: Book (9781558283787)
Date Reviewed: May 1 1995

Books that attempt to troubleshoot computer problems vary widely. At one end of the spectrum are books containing specific instructions that tell someone exactly what keys to push to eliminate a problem, without giving any further information. At the other end are books that cover the general theory associated with a computer, but do not provide any details on solving a problem.

This book is midway between these extremes. Although written as a reference, it invites the casual reader to study a chapter. The book has an eye-catching layout. The font used within the text is fairly large, and there is plenty of white space to help someone who might be skimming.

The book comes with a 3.5-inch diskette that contains an examination copy of QAPlus by DiagSoft. Also included is a current listing of computer vendors and their support phone numbers. Finally, a data communication program called COM-AND is included on the floppy.

All software on the included floppy is either shareware or crippleware. For example, the version of QAPlus included with the floppy is a limited version of the standard version that is popularly sold. The book mentions that QAplus is available for $64.95. The floppy also has an order form that mentions a $49.95 upgrade, however. It is unclear whether DiagSoft regards the enclosed software as eligible for the upgrade offer. With the software, the total cost for the book approaches $100, assuming you register the software and pay the $32.95 list price for the book. The book is fine without the enclosed software, however.

Perhaps the most innovative aspect of the book is the “Problem Index” that follows the table of contents. Chances are good that in skimming this index, you will encounter a problem similar to one that you are trying to solve.

The downside of this book is its attempts to handle difficult computer problems. For example, it attempts to cover common networking problems and dedicates a chapter to common solutions. It neglects to point the reader to another book for further help, however. Neither does it mention that an entire book can be written on troubleshooting and resolving networking problems.

Overall, I recommend this book for novice users who are working with minimal technical support. It provides a good start for diagnosing and resolving problems. Although it may not be able to solve the problem for you, it does help by pointing you in the proper direction.
