Broquard’s Programming with MFC for Windows 95 [1] is a beginners’ manual for Windows programming using the Microsoft Foundation Class (MFC) library. In Intermediate MFC, he presents more complex MFC techniques for creating Windows 95 and Windows NT applications.
The book contains 13 chapters, two appendices, and an index. The first two chapters are dedicated to using the new Visual C++ 5.0 font management features to create a font selection control. Appendix A contains basic font terminology.
In the next 5 chapters, Broquard describes MFC methods and techniques for scaling, printing, previewing, and displaying text and graphic information. In chapters 8 and 9, he illustrates use of the database access object (DAO) classes for updating Microsoft Access and generating database reports. The construction and use of control bars and dialog boxes are described in chapter 10. In chapter 11, using a real application, Broquard demonstrates some techniques for working with complex documents. Chapter 12 is devoted to MFC encapsulation of metafiles (collections of graphic functions that generate images during their execution).
In the last chapter, Broquard applies the new MFC Internet classes to the creation of an ftp browser with download capabilities. In Appendix B, he presents the new heap memory management functions for Windows.
Each chapter employs real-world sample programs. The accompanying CD-ROM includes all sample code. All in all, this is a practical and attractive manual for MFC and Win32 programmers.
