Economics of identity theft
Camp L., Springer-Verlag New York, Inc., Secaucus, NJ, 2007. 181 pp. Type: Book (9780387345895)
Date Reviewed: Jun 4 2008

The cover of this work promises a book that is “designed for a professional audience composed of practitioners and researchers.” It is 181 pages in total, with an index that is only slightly over one page. Most of the book’s 18 chapters are less than ten pages long, and have titles such as “Identity in Economics and in Context,” “Modern Technological and Traditional Identities,” and “Security and Privacy as Market Failures.” The bibliography is somewhat comprehensive, although quite spotty after 2003.

This book will not satisfy practitioners, as it has few practical implementation suggestions. Implementers and practitioners will be much better off with other titles [1,2,3]. The book will satisfy researchers less, as it is far too introductory; they will benefit more from recent online searches of proceedings and journal articles.

The only possible audience that I can imagine is the middle manager or academic dean who is unfamiliar with the topic, although even this audience will be better served by a livelier introduction in the popular literature [4,5].

For a publisher with generally higher standards, this title has little that would lead me to recommend it.
