Ontology-based application integration
Paulheim H., Springer Publishing Company, Incorporated, New York, NY, 2011. 286 pp. Type: Book (978-1-461414-29-2)
Date Reviewed: May 24 2012

With the advancement of semantic Web technologies, it is becoming popular to use ontologies to build software applications--a topic that is explained in this book. While this is an important topic of discussion, integrating individual components or applications to build an integrated application is also important.

This book is divided into three parts. The first part explains the use of ontologies for system integration, and user interface development. A framework for application integration is provided in this section. The author explains this part very well. The second part of the book describes integrating user interfaces with ontologies in great detail. The third part deals with the future of ontology-based user interface (UI) integration. The author uses several self-descriptive figures and tables to describe the topics.

The book is heavily focused on user interfaces for system integration. One of the critical topics addressed by the author is the use of ontologies for various problem domains.

Overall, this is a good book that deals with various topics related to integrating systems using methodologies that use ontologies. The book can be used by researchers involved in the development of tools and frameworks that use ontologies for system integration. However, this book may not be suitable as a textbook for a course on the topics covered therein. I firmly believe that this book could be expanded greatly in a future edition by explaining some fundamental topics of semantic Web technologies and the use of domain-specific ontologies in building applications.
