The Bulgarian language in the digital age
Rehm G., Uszkoreit H., Springer Publishing Company, Incorporated, New York, NY, 2012. 87 pp. Type: Book (978-3-642301-67-4)
Date Reviewed: Nov 2 2012

With a survey of the Bulgarian language and a high-level overview of language technologies in general, this book documents the status of digital language resources and language technologies for Bulgarian. It is part of a series published within the European META-NET initiative that comments on the status and state of different European languages. The book includes a special account of the META-NET initiative and its mission and activities.

The book includes two identical parts--one in Bulgarian and one in English—and each part is thematically divided into three chapters. The first tackles the challenges of the digital age with respect to language vitality and preservation. The second briefly describes the main characteristics of the Bulgarian language and the difficulties of providing automated processing in Bulgarian. It also includes a discussion of the basics of language technologies. Finally, the third chapter presents statistics and comparative charts on the available language resources and technologies for all European languages, providing an overview of the states of the language technologies for the various languages.

Although the book presents an interesting overview of the Bulgarian language and available language technologies, the authors should have included information about not only European Union (EU) projects with Bulgarian participation, but also centers and organizations active in the area of Bulgarian language processing research and development. They might have also provided an extensive list of the technologies and resources available.

This book is interesting reading for officials and decision makers in the fields of research and development, language technologies, and budget formation and allocation in Bulgaria, Europe, and all over the world. It is of marginal interest to scholars and industry representatives active in the realm of research and development, or those interested in the use of language technologies in general or Bulgarian language technologies in particular.
