This edited volume provides readers with a research review of applications and advances of artificial intelligence (AI) in the healthcare sector.
The book starts by briefly reviewing the history and role of AI in medicine (chapter 1). Chapters 2 and 3 offer a soft guided start in the foundations of AI. The authors explain the basic tools and techniques and the algorithms behind them, and discuss some of the advantages and disadvantages of the different approaches presented and their potential for further development. Chapter 4 introduces more tools and techniques, similar to previous chapters, but focuses with greater intensity on the practical medical application of the algorithms presented.
The rest of the book covers medical applications of AI classification, image processing, decision support, diagnosis, assisted living, telemedicine, and drug safety.
All in all, this book is a great start for an audience with a strong affinity for both computer science and medicine. The technical introduction provided in the beginning chapters enables the nontechnical reader to understand most of the underlying concepts and techniques used in the application cases discussed in the rest of the book. For a technical audience, the introductory chapters are a welcome refresher. The book also covers a wide range of application examples, which enables the reader to gain an overall impression of the advances and challenges of AI as a tool in different medical science areas. Advanced readers may benefit from the more specialized chapters in this book.
