Artificial intelligence, game theory and mechanism design in politics
Marwala T., Palgrave Macmillan, New York, NY, 2023. 233 pp. Type: Book (981995102X)
Date Reviewed: Dec 29 2023

This book serves as guide to the use of artificial intelligence (AI), game theory, and mechanism design in politics. Marwala takes a simple approach to these subjects. He explains AI concepts at a level suitable to readers without technical knowledge. Even readers without any background knowledge will find the book easy to read and interesting. I enjoyed reading about how politics can be connected to these areas.

The early chapters give foundational knowledge about AI, game theory, and mechanism design. The later chapters explain the applicability of these areas to politics. The book uses examples from real-world scenarios. It also explores bias and the ethical implications of AI in politics. Note that there is repetitive information throughout the book, especially with regards to AI. For instance, it is mentioned several times that deep learning models need vast amounts of data and have a black box nature.

The other chapters explore the relationship between data and politics. The author explains how data can help politicians make informed decisions. These chapters also cover deep learning, natural language processing (NLP), evolutionary programming, cybersecurity, social media, robotics, and the integration of AI with blockchain in politics.

In summary, this is an enjoyable read for anyone interested in the interdisciplinary field of politics, AI, game theory, and mechanism design.
