VRML clearly explained (2nd ed.)
Vacca J., Academic Press Prof., Inc., San Diego, CA, 1998. Type: Book (9780127100081)
Date Reviewed: Jun 1 1998

This book, which consists of just over 800 pages plus a CD-ROM, provides what its title promises. However, the back cover states that the expected skill level of readers ranges from “Beginner to Intermediate.” The beginners I know might find the book intimidating. The Virtual Reality Modeling Language--specifically, VRML 2.0 and VRML97--is described in detail, and many pertinent illustrations are included. The subtopic that gets the most attention is OpenGL, the Open Graphics Library. The potential for widespread use of VRML on the Web, causing severe transmission degradation, is discussed, as are approaches to mitigating this problem. Many uses of VRML are described. Those involving military simulations are particularly interesting. All in all, the author succeeds in explaining VRML, its history, its uses, its potential, and how it is likely to develop.
