This paper describes a new adaptive forward error correction scheme for data traffic. The authors describe their scheme in great detail, including a firmware implementation. They also compare performance of the proposed scheme with other schemes, showing a significant advantage to the proposed scheme.
The scheme described is both important and of great interest, given the recent increase in wireless communications. The proposed scheme extends the previously proposed mechanism, the concatenated FEC scheme, by dynamically changing the FEC rate as noise level varies in the wireless channels. However, the authors do not provide enough background on the concatenated FEC scheme.
The paper is appropriate for an expert in the networking area. I found the author’s presentation of the performance results rather confusing and hard to follow. Furthermore, the authors use many acronyms with no definition or explanation. Finally, I believe the data rate assumed on the simulations is very low and the performance gain with their adaptive scheme may diminish at higher data rates with increased noise level. From Figures 10 and 11 in the paper, the proposed adaptive FEC scheme seems to be behaving similarly to the other mechanisms at high error rates.
